Historical Overview

Originally constructed in 1881, The Vanderbilt has been associated with many prominent figures from its inception to now. Over its long history, it was owned by wealthy businessman Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt who used some of his wealth from stock market speculation and inherited railroad fortune from his father Cornelius to acquire several high-end properties around Newport such as this one. Following his death in 1915, his widow kept ownership until 1922, when it was converted into a private clubhouse and later sold off piece by piece to members of the nearby Fenner family until 2003, when Peter Kupon purchased it along with two adjoining cottages before handing it over to hotelier Dean Adler who turned it into what is today – a luxury boutique hotel nestled in downtown Newport Rhode Island that continues to honor Alfred Gwynne's spirit of exploration and adventure through its unique activities and experiences available for both locals and travelers alike.
