He was a tech nerd doing cyber security for defense contractors in Washington, D.C. when he started LuxRally, an exotic car rally. It takes a very special person to be comfortable at 200 mph. It requires an appreciation for calculated risk, human innovation, and self-awareness. The people attracted to the exotic car world embody these qualities. They are, in their hearts, disruptors. A hotel asked David whether he wanted a group rate for his rally. He turned them down initially but then did some research. He discovered that, as an agent, he would be able to get 40-60% off hotels for his rally. David quickly found a host agency and secured an IATA for himself. It's important to understand that LuxRally wasn't your typically exotic car rally. It was known for its Forbes Five-Star hotels, epic routes, and Michelin-starred dining. David had a reputation in the car world for doing extravagant things. When people found out he had become a travel agent, they wanted to see what he could do to enhance their experiences beyond the rally. Word quickly spread that David was something different. Within a few short years, David began earning millions a year in commissions. Travel became his sole focus and obsession. He didn't do things like other agents, creating dissent in the community. He would get kicked out of travel agent groups for suggesting that agents stop charging fees to reduce the friction of a sale. He didn't believe in long, exhausting "discovery" calls with clients or trying to build "pretty PDFs." Instead, David would make bookings within minutes and provide his clients with blunt feedback. Every exertion of his energy was precise and efficient, and clients couldn't get enough. He was the antithesis of a typical agent. In 2022, David left his host agency. His unique approach to the industry was creating tension, and he didn't want to be beholden to anyone. His wife, Courtney Eisen, with a tech and marketing background, assisted with the launch, along with a small band of agents who noticed David's exponential rise in earnings. LuxRally Travel was born. David, free to build towards his vision, began coding the tech that would reshape the industry. Instead of lugging around his laptop and logging into dozens of systems to shop rates, he built FastBook, which pulls all available rates within 30 seconds. He began automating tedious administrative tasks. At his previous host, invoicing, commission collections, and unmatched commissions were a mess. They would send unmatched commissions in a PDF. Joining a Host Agency Will Simplify the Process When you join a host agency, a lot of the licensing and regulatory headaches disappear. Your host agency will provide an IATA number (which allows you to make commissionable bookings), handle your licensing, and (should) let you know if you need to file any paperwork. Your host agency's licensing will cover you unless you accept money directly from clients into your business entity or bank account. You will technically need your own Seller of Travel License if collecting fees into your business entity from Florida, California, Hawaii or Washington state residents (some additional states have other regulations regarding these transactions), and that gets expensive fast. Earn More Don't Accidentally Become a Tour Operator Something else new agents may not consider is tour operator regulations. Being a tour operator requires additional credentials. You can "accidentally" become a tour operator when you try to put together a packaged trip. For example, you may want to put together a wine package for $10,000. You charge people for "tickets" that include hotels, tours, and car services. If you accept this money directly (not through your host agency) and then pay out each supplier, you will need to become a legal tour operator and carry the risk. We are based in Florida, Therefore, our agents only need to file an Independent Agent Affidavit/Statement of Exemption and pay a fee of $51.50 to the State of Florida each year.
