You will technically need your own Seller of Travel License if collecting fees into your business entity from Florida, California, Hawaii or Washington state residents (some additional states have other regulations regarding these transactions), and that gets expensive fast. Accepting direct payments from clients for travel may require compliance with additional business, tax, and licensing regulations imposed by city, county, and/or state authorities. Be sure to review and adhere to these requirements if payments are processed through your personal or business accounts. Fees don't just complicate your credentials; they also complicate your relationships with clients. This is something we discuss in our free travel agent training. Many travel agencies strongly recommend charging a fee. We do not. Our agents are banned from charging fees but earn more thanks to our efficient tools and comprehensive training. Earn More Don't Accidentally Become a Tour Operator Something else new agents may not consider is tour operator regulations. Being a tour operator requires additional credentials. You can "accidentally" become a tour operator when you try to put together a packaged trip. For example, you may want to put together a wine package for $10,000. You charge people for "tickets" that include hotels, tours, and car services. If you accept this money directly (not through your host agency) and then pay out each supplier, you will need to become a legal tour operator and carry the risk. This is usually a not-so-profitable and high-risk endeavor. There are much easier ways for a travel agent to land large payouts. We discuss this in detail in our travel agent training. Our agents do not accept payments from their clients to their business entities. All of their transactions run through us (the host agency). We are based in Florida, Therefore, our agents only need to file an Independent Agent Affidavit/Statement of Exemption and pay a fee of $51.50 to the State of Florida each year. This may sound intimidating, but it's not. We cover this step by step in our new agent orientation. After that, our agents are fully credentialed and ready to legally earn commissions under our IATA. Join Our Agency Educational Requirements and Certifications There is no educational requirement to become a travel agent in New Mexico. However, host agencies will typically have required training or steps to access their credentials and IATA. Your host agency will provide an IATA number (which allows you to make commissionable bookings), handle your licensing, and (should) let you know if you need to file any paperwork. Your host agency's licensing will cover you unless you accept money directly from clients into your business entity or bank account. You will technically need your own Seller of Travel License if collecting fees into your business entity from Florida, California, Hawaii or Washington state residents (some additional states have other regulations regarding these transactions), and that gets expensive fast. If you intend to accept payments directly, make sure to check out the Washington State Sellers of Travel regulations to get the most up to date information. Accepting direct payments from clients for travel may require compliance with additional business, tax, and licensing regulations imposed by city, county, and/or state authorities. Be sure to review and adhere to these requirements if payments are processed through your personal or business accounts. Fees don't just complicate your credentials; they also complicate your relationships with clients. This is something we discuss in our free travel agent training. Many travel agencies strongly recommend charging a fee. We do not. Our agents are banned from charging fees but earn more thanks to our efficient tools and comprehensive training. Earn More Don't Accidentally Become a Tour Operator Something else new agents may not consider is tour operator regulations. Being a tour operator requires additional credentials. You can "accidentally" become a tour operator when you try to put together a packaged trip. For example, you may want to put together a wine package for $10,000. You charge people for "tickets" that include hotels, tours, and car services. If you accept this money directly (not through your host agency) and then pay out each supplier, you will need to become a legal tour operator and carry the risk. This is usually a not-so-profitable and high-risk endeavor. There are much easier ways for a travel agent to land large payouts. We discuss this in detail in our travel agent training. Aman Venice, Italy How Licensing Works for Our Agents We hold all of the sellers of travel licenses needed in the United States. Our agents do not accept payments from their clients to their business entities. All of their transactions run through us (the host agency). We are based in Florida, Therefore, our agents only need to file an Independent Agent Affidavit/Statement of Exemption and pay a fee of $51.50 to the State of Florida each year. This may sound intimidating, but it's not. We cover this step by step in our new agent orientation. After that, our agents are fully credentialed and ready to legally earn commissions under our IATA. Join Our Agency Educational Requirements and Certifications There is no educational requirement to become a travel agent in Washington. However, host agencies will typically have required training or steps to access their credentials and IATA. For example, at our host travel agency, LuxRally Travel, we do background checks and require our agents to graduate from our training. We have standards, so our training is quite challenging. You could probably find a host agency that would give you access to their credentials and IATA in days. However, what happens after that? A single billionaire client can earn you six figures per year in commission. If you are willing to dedicate yourself to excellence, you'll eventually get an incredible book of business. Our commission splits start at 80%/20% (you keep 80%) and then moves up to 90%/10% after your first $100,000 in earned commissions each year. Some host agencies advertise 100% commission splits. Agents often think the agency is just making money on the subscription fees from agents. This is incorrect. Host agencies keep overrides of 1-3% in these cases. We know because we are a host agency and get these overrides. Suppliers are shocked to hear we are passing these to our agents. For example, the agent at a 100% commission agency thinks the commission is 10% when it's actually 13% (if you consider the override). We pass along our margins to agents to use as they see fit. I.e., Norwegian Cruise Lines gives us an override. We pass this along to our agents to use for onboard credit to close deals versus pocketing the money and advertising 100% comms. At the end of the day 100% commission splits are actually 70%/30%, sometimes 60%/40% after factoring in the override. Maximize Your Income No Experience Required Everyone knows someone who travels. No experience is required to become a LuxRally Travel agent. Our course will teach you everything you need to know to get started and you'll have an incredible team to support your journey. We accept existing agents (those who are looking to switch host agencies) and new agents (people who have never been a travel agent before). Of course, it will take time and hard work to master this industry. We seek motivated people wanting to change their lives and "escape the matrix." People are traveling all around you; we want you if you see that as an opportunity. Your network can make or break you. If you do not know many people who travel, get ready to go out and meet new people. Otherwise, you will have a hard time hitting our sales minimums. We read every application; this is our first impression of you. If you do not pay attention to the fine print (a massive part of being a travel agent) and put thought into your answer to, "Why would you thrive at our agency?", expect to be rejected. Expectations of Our Agents You are Starting Your Own Business: This is a 1099 independent contractor position. You will need to decide whether you want to create a business entity (i.e., an LLC) and handle your taxes and other business-related tasks. You must complete a W9 and set up your payment information with us so we can disburse your commissions without delay (we cover this in Orientation). Independent Agent Affidavit/Statement of Exemption : You must file a Statement of Exemption each year to remain active with our agency. This is a form and fee of $51.50 paid directly to the State of Florida. We provide step-by-step instructions on how to do this during Orientation. Our host agency's credentials fully cover you upon completing the exemption statement. Reliable Connection: You need a reliable phone, laptop, and internet connection. After graduating, you will likely need an international cell phone plan (usually $15 per month). Availability to Your Clients: When someone calls, you need to answer or get back to them as soon as possible. Otherwise, their customer service experience is worse than that of a call center. Sure, they'll need to wait on hold, but eventually, someone will answer. If your client calls us and has an emergency, we will try to get ahold of you. If we need to service your client, you will be billed $250 per hour in 15-minute increments. We have never had to charge an agent this fee. Don't be the first. If you know you will be unavailable while a client is actively traveling, collaborate with another agent or our in-house concierge to cover for you. Sales Minimums: The year is divided into four standard quarters: Q1: January 1 - March 31 Q2: April 1 - June 30 Q3: July 1 - September 30 Q4: October 1 - December 31 New agents are required to generate $2,500 in revenue during their first full quarter after graduation (Around $250 in commission). Starting in the second full quarter, the requirement increases to $5,000 in revenue per quarter (around $500 in commission), aligning with the standard for all agents.
