Train Overview
The Royal Scotsman is one of two luxury trains run by Belmond, which has operated top-class services in Europe for more than 40 years. The train features nine en suite cabins accommodating up to 36 passengers at any one time, allowing for an intimate setting throughout your trip. With highly experienced staff on hand during your travels, you can expect attentive service from start to finish.
On board, you'll find enlarged observation compartments from where you can watch the ever-changing scenery outside. Passengers have access to wireless internet throughout the journey, televisions with classic movie channels, and a private bar! History
The history behind the Royal Scotsman dates back nearly 100 years, when Captain George Smith first proposed his vision for a sleeper car railway system between Edinburgh and London—and two Scottish companies were subsequently formed in 1923 to begin operation of these services on what was originally intended as a freight route running through both England and Scotland; one line was called The Caledonian Sleeper while another took on the name The Royal Scotsman.
Since then, this luxurious train has carried tens of thousands of passengers along hundreds of routes throughout Scotland – many of them still remain in operation today! In 1993, ownership passed over into private hands, with Belmond taking control shortly thereafter. Belmond then ordered new carriages, which were built on traditional lines but with an abundance of modern touches, such as flat-panel TVs and luxurious ensuite bathrooms. The train became so wrapped in opulence that one could argue that this is not just a simple 'train' but an entire rolling five star hotel!
Dining
On-board dining is among some of the best available anywhere in Britain–freshly prepared dishes made from locally sourced ingredients add something extra special to each mealtime on your journey. Breakfast starts off with classics, including Black Pudding or Kippers served alongside cereals or yogurts; lunch might be Poached Salmon Fillet or Lamb Navarin followed by delectable desserts such as Raspberry Trifle or Chocolate Gateaux; while dinner consists of lavish fare, including Venison loin or Roast Grouse–all washed down by either fine wines or single malts whisky if you fancy!
